Kartini Day

So my school recently celebrated Kartini Day and all the teachers dressed up and we had some competitions.. Here is a short explanation about Kartini Day and what its all about..

Kartini Day is an Indonesian holiday commemorating the birth in 1879 of Raden Ajeng Kartini, one of the country's national heroes and a pioneer in the emancipation of Indonesian women. Throughout Indonesia women wear their national dress to symbolize their unity, and the nation enjoys parades, lectures, and various school activities.

Lady Kartini, the daughter of a Javanese nobleman who worked for the Dutch colonial administration, was exposed to Western ideas when she attended a Dutch school. When she had to withdraw from school because she was of noble birth, she corresponded with Dutch friends telling of her concern both for the plight of Indonesians under colonial rule and for the restricted lives of Indonesian women. She married in 1903 and began a fight for the right of women to be educated and against the unwritten but all-pervading Javanese law, Adat .

She died in 1904 at the age of 25, after the birth of her first child. Her letters were published in 1911 under the title, Door duisternis tot licht ("Through Darkness into Light"), and created support for the Kartini Foundation, which opened the first girls' school in Java in 1916.

Welcome to the Peep Show

so this past weekend i got a chance to go to this lake this weekend for a night and get to hang out with some volunteers, 2 of which will be leaving at the end of may. it was pretty fun..

we stayed at sarangon lake. it was ok it was pretty nice when everyone had left and it got dark out.. during the day it was really busy and full of people.. which is not my cup of tea.  we ended up staying off the beaten path on the side of a ‘mountain’ with some great scenery. we sat around for a few hours and then got to work cooking.. well.. i didnt do anything but i took a bunch of pictures. we ended up getting a rabbit and two chickens.. it took forever for us to set up and cook the food but in the end it was awesome..

after dinner we ended up eating some s’mores, which were awesome.. afterwards we sat around for a little bit before it started raining.. then we all slipped into our ‘tent’ and then we proceeded to sleep.. it was ok.. it actually was really cold.. i was right in the middle and trying to move around to a comfortable position was really difficult.. mary ellen was smart and she had a sleeping bag and she let me use some of it for my cold feet.. it was nice and it helped a little bit..

and then in the morning we talked about a whole bunch of stuff and then got one last group shot.. after that we said our goodbyes to sam and andy, who we may not get a chance to see again.. it was a really good time..

and now.. back to real life..

1.5 months left until VACATION!

BEWARE: Some photos are NOT for the squeamish..
